Soliloquy of the Soul

Soliloquy – noun; an act of speaking one’s thoughts aloud by oneself or regardless of any hearers, esp. by a character in a play

I think it’s time for honesty and authenticity.  It’s time for my soul to be expressed without fear of condemnation or offense.  My soul has a voice and it’s dying to speak.  I think it’s time I let it.

So here is my Soliloquy of the Soul – my journey into myself and giving a voice to what I find.  Letting go of old belief systems and opening up to new.  And all the pain and joy that follows.

To give you some information about my spiritual background, I grew up in a strong, Christian home.  I attended church every Sunday and Wednesday, and I was very involved in the youth group and Christian school organizations.  When I went to college, I got out of my small town bubble and started learning about different religions and cultures.  I also started to critically question the world around me, including (and most oftentimes) my fellow Christians.  The more I learned and questioned, the more I started to see the inconsistencies, flaws, and hypocrisy from people claiming the Christian faith.  There were just too many unanswered questions and too many interpretations and divisions.  It’s like everyone took one message of love and unity, gave their own spin on it, and then claimed it to be the “right” and “only” way.

I think it is pretty clear that the way we all are doing things isn’t getting us anywhere.  All of the divisions have done nothing but cause turmoil.  So let’s critically analyze what we have been doing and figure out what we need to do to fix it.  Because clearly it goes a lot deeper than simply accepting Jesus Christ as your personal Lord and Savior and getting dipped in some water.  Anyone can make that confession.  It's truly living the life Jesus instructed us to live that's the hard part.  We need to really figure him out and why he acted the way he did.

I have always felt very close to the inner being inside me.  That’s why I was such a strong, active, vocal Christian when I was younger.  I couldn’t quite explain everything, but I just felt good and at ease deep down knowing that I was doing the right thing and on the right path to being a good person.  It was when the church started telling me that these things were “wrong” and urged me to do things that my inner being was not comfortable with that I really started to question all that I said I believed.

I decided to learn and discover on my own and follow my own heart.  I have always been told that God is within me and that God is love, and I still believe those things with every ounce of my being.    And it is there that I want to begin.  This is the one thing that a lot of people, regardless of religion or cultural background) can agree on, and I believe that it is from here that we must all start.  I think there's a lot that can be fixed in the world if people are able to just accept their differences and move on together in love for the greater good.

So I am opening up the conversation and giving a voice to the generation who just wants to do good things in the world - regardless of whether or not they even believe in God.  Though this blog will have a spiritual tone, I hope it can give practical, down-to-earth information on how to live life to the fullest and be proud of the person you are.

*Please Note:  The goal of this blog is to build bridges among people of different religions and backgrounds on the firm, common foundation of love.  Ideally, this would be a space where people are able to have open, free conversations with each other on the grounds of "agreeing to disagree".  I want it to be a place where we can accept individuals for who they are and leave all worries of differences at the door (or login screen, lol).  A place where like-minded, intelligent, loving, respectful people can discuss what's going on in our world and what we need to do to fix it.  Not seeking to change or convert anyone.  Just a chance for us to come together and talk about what really matters in the world.  Because bickering about things like gay rights and abortion just aren't getting us anywhere.  Our world and society are not in the best of shape, and I think it's time that we all sit down and really look to the root of the problems.  I think you'll quickly find that things like who wants to marry who and whether or not a woman wants to have a baby are the least of our worries.
